How often should you change your oil in Douala?
It's the question we hear most often at the workshop. The short answer: more often than your service book says, if you mostly drive in town.

What your manufacturer says
Every service book sets an interval in kilometres and months. But most manufacturers also define "severe operating conditions" with a shorter interval. Those conditions are exactly what Douala drivers face.
Why Douala wears oil out faster
- Heat: an engine running hot for long periods breaks the oil down faster.
- Traffic jams: an engine idling for an hour works without the odometer moving, so mileage underestimates real wear.
- Dust: it clogs the air filter and, eventually, the oil.
- Short trips: the engine doesn't always reach its ideal temperature.
Our recommendation
For mostly city driving, have your oil checked roughly every 5,000 km, and never exceed the manufacturer's interval or one year between changes. For mixed driving with plenty of open road, the manufacturer's interval may be enough. If in doubt, check your service book or ask us.
Signs it's time
- The oil warning light or service indicator comes on
- The oil on the dipstick is black and thick, or the level is low
- The engine sounds noisier than usual
- Fuel consumption goes up
What about filters?
The oil filter is changed with every oil change. Air and cabin filters are checked at every visit: in Douala, they clog quickly.
Our Essential Oil Change package includes oil, filter and a 20-point check at an upfront price. Register your vehicle for a WhatsApp reminder before your next oil change.
