Buying a used car in Douala without getting ripped off
A good used car can save you millions of XAF. A bad one can cost as much in repairs. Here are the checks we carry out for our customers before they sign.

1. Papers first
Is the registration document in the seller's name? Does the chassis number on it match the one on the vehicle? Are customs clearance documents and the roadworthiness test up to date?
2. Mileage
Compare the odometer with wear on the steering wheel, gear lever and pedals. A shiny wheel on a car "with 60,000 km" should raise questions. An electronic diagnostic can also reveal inconsistencies.
3. Bodywork
Uneven panel gaps, colour differences, paint on rubber seals: all signs of a repaired impact.
4. Cold engine
Ask to start the engine cold. Smoke, metallic noises or hard starting are warning signs.
5. Warning lights
With the ignition on, all lights should come on and then go out once the engine starts. A light that never comes on may have been disconnected.
6. Underneath
Oil or fluid leaks, rust, damage to the sump.
7. Test drive
Gearbox, brakes, steering pulling, suspension noise over speed bumps, air conditioning.
8. Service history
Invoices, service book, date of the last timing belt change.
The safest option: a professional inspection
Our Pre-purchase Inspection covers all of these points plus an electronic diagnostic, and ends with a written report. Buy with confidence, or negotiate the price.
